Recovered paper deliveries between UK and EU stall at start of new year
Supply chains between the EU and the UK have run into serious problems from the end of the Brexit transition phase. Difficulties have emerged particularly with transborder lorry movement while traffic though sea ports is said to be faring partially better.
Particularly hard hit are many recycling companies, often small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), who want to deliver British recovered paper to the EU. According to Simon Ellin, CEO of The Recycling Association, roughly 10 per cent of the total annual British recovered paper generation i.e. about 500,000-750,000 t is delivered to the EU. The main problem with deliveries is the significant increase in documentation overhead at the frontier, which alone increases clearing times, even when everything else proceeds smoothly. Furthermore, drivers entering France must produce a negative PCR test, which again increases waiting times.
Hauliers temporarily suspend UK freight traffic
In any case, smooth was not how things went at least at the beginning of January 2021. According press reports issued by logistics company Schenker and the German freight forwarders and logistics association DSLV, between 80 and 90 per cent of the shipments in UK-EU trade were incorrectly or incompletely documented, causing long lorry lines at the EU frontier. Several hauliers including Schenker and Palletways responded to the long queues at the frontier in early January by temporarily refusing to accept freight on the EU-UK route.
